The Five Loaves & Two Fish Food Pantry depends on community support to
operate. Each month, nearly 100 volunteers staff the Food Pantry and
perform activities in its support.
There are currently three major annual food drives conducted for the
Five
Loaves & Two Fish Food Pantry.
In February, the Flint River Council Boy Scouts of America conduct
"Scouting
for Food." The Scouts place bags at residences throughout the community
and
return one week later to collect bags filled with donated canned goods.
The
Scouts then bring the donations to the Food Pantry, where they are
sorted
and stored for later distribution to the needy.
In May, the Letter Carriers of America (with the support of the Griffin
Post
Office) conduct "Stamp Out Hunger." Residents leave non-perishable
food
donations at their mailboxes for collection by mail carriers. The food
is
then brought to the Post Office for sorting and is later delivered to
the
Food Pantry for storage and later distribution.
In October, local photographer Rick Blackshear conducts the "Together We
Can" Food Drive. Rick offers a photo package to individuals and groups
in
exchange for a food donation. The food is sorted and delivered to the
Food
Pantry. Rick has had the support of several other businesses and civic
clubs over the years in conducting "Together We Can."
The Knights of Columbus of Sacred Heart Church regularly support all
three
of these drives by supplying the labor necessary for making the events
successful.
